Legislators pushing looser gun laws this session

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) -- Indiana lawmakers are working to ease state gun regulations despite reservations from local officials and gun control advocates.

The Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne reports at least three bills that would ease gun restrictions are working their way through the Legislature. They include bills that would allow handguns to be more freely carried without a permit and make it permissible to take guns into public buildings and parks in most cases.

Former Fort Wayne Mayor Paul Helmke is head of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. Helmke says a recent survey found only 9 percent of gun-owning households in Indiana favored less strict gun laws.
