BARDWELL, Ky. (AP) -- A western Kentucky mayor has declared his city a disaster area after severe storms blew through and left buildings and trees damaged in its wake.
Bardwell Mayor Phillip King made the declaration Saturday for the town in Carlisle County. County Judge-Executive Greg Terry told WPSD-TV in Paducah that the damage looked like the result of a tornado.
Terry said several buildings appeared to have collapsed and it appeared that the Bardwell Baptist Church also sustained damage.
Highway 51 in Bardwell is shut down. City leaders fear buildings now standing may still collapse from damage sustained during the storm.
Despite the destruction, the county judge executive and mayor reported no major injuries.
