Plea deal in southern Indiana sex party case
LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- A tentative plea deal has been reached in the case of a southern Indiana woman accused of having oral sex with a 15-year-old boy at a drinking party at her house.
Police said 38-year-old Mary Dennis held the party at her Floyds Knobs home, and that she had sex with at least three other teens during parties in September. Dennis was also accused of serving alcohol to at least six teens, including her 13-year-old daughter.
The deal calls for three years in jail, then four years probation. Formal sentencing is set for July.
Brian Butler, Dennis's attorney, tells WDRB News, "She's been in counseling and every kind of self-improvement she could possibly be in since this happened. It's just devastating for her. She was going through a terrible time in her life. I mean, she doesn't use that as an excuse, obviously, and she took responsibility for her actions here today.
Prosecutor Brittany Blau reacted: "While it's sensational, and maybe of questionable morals, it's not illegal. Certainly as the state I was far more concerned about the fact that her daughter was present, that her daughter had been supplied alcohol and that her daughter participated in the sexual parties."
Because Dennis has no prior convictions, it's likely she will serve only a year and a half in jail. Some of the jail time could be served as work release. She will have to register as a sex offender, have an HIV test, and cannot have contact with any of the victims.
