NY Target store workers reject unionization

NEW YORK (AP) -- Workers at a Target store on New York's Long Island have voted against joining the country's largest retail union.

Both sides say the workers at Target's Valley Stream store voted 137-85 Friday night against unionization. A "yes" vote would have made the store the first of the company's 1,700 locations to bring in organized labor.

The United and Commercial Workers Union Local 1500 says it's contesting the results and asking the federal government to order a new election. The union says Target management illegally threatened and intimidated the workers.

Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder denies the union's allegations and says the company believes it has acted "in a completely lawful manner."
