LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB Fox 41) -- Some lucky Louisville residents are getting surprising phone calls that the Kentucky State Treasury has money for them.

A room full of volunteers made calls to some Louisville residents on Saturday, hoping to let them know the Kentucky State Treasury Department has money for them.

"The first reaction is, who are you and who are you calling from and it seems like it might be a sales call when someone unknown calls them," says Cindy Adelberg, a volunteer.

"In the 9th District and edge of another couple of districts, there's $4.2 million sitting there at the Kentucky State Treasury Department that's unclaimed," says Tina Ward Pugh, who represents Council District 9.

On Saturday, the volunteers let people know about unclaimed property through the Treasure Finders Kentucky Program.

"I'm enjoying it. It's something different and hopefully it will make somebody happy," says Deloris Collins, a volunteer.

"Whether it be a grandfather or a friend or a will or a lockbox that has some information in there and we can't find them now," says Tina Ward Pugh.

As Ben McQuese found out, that wasn't the case.

"So we're going to get a few dollars. Maybe enough to go on a trip," says Ben McQuese.

McQuese is now planning to take a cruise with the money he's getting back.

Some other lucky Jefferson County residents could soon be getting similar calls

"It took ten minutes. It's the easiest money I've made," says Ben McQuese.

The Kentucky State Treasury is holding $69 million in unclaimed property and cash in Jefferson County alone.

Upcoming events will help notify more people.
