Ex-Lexington firefighter dies in blaze at home

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- A former Lexington firefighter has been found dead inside his after a weekend blaze consumed the house.

Battalion Chief Marshall Griggs told WKYT-TV in Lexington that firefighters found 85-year-old George McDaniel on Saturday morning after putting out a blaze at his home.

McDaniel served as a Lexington firefighter from 1951 to 1981, retiring as a battalion chief.

Griggs said a newspaper carrier saw smoke at about 6 a.m. EDT Saturday and called in the report.

Griggs said firefighters found a "heavy blaze" that had been burning for some time, then found McDaniel's body in the back of the home.

McDaniel's family says he leaves behind one son, two granddaughters, and one great granddaughter. Investigators say there were smoke detectors in the home, but they're not sure they were working.
