Donation boxes aimed at reducing panhandling

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Louisville Downtown Management just installed 12 metal boxes to encourage people to put money in there instead of giving it to panhandlers.

The boxes are located throughout the Central Business District.  It's part of a new program called "Positive Change" to reduce panhandling in downtown Louisville.

Ken Herndon of Louisville Downtown Management explains, "Most people panhandling are not homeless. Many do have and are feeding a substance abuse issue and a whole bunch are just out there working people for their money."

The money collected will go to the Coalition for the Homeless.
