LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Attorney General Jack Conway says he will investigate University Hospital's recently announced plans to merge with the parent company of Jewish Hospital and St. Mary's Healthcare.
Denver-based Catholic Health Initiatives would be the lead partner in the new venture. That has been criticized as religious concerns would prevent University Hospital from performing certain reproductive medical procedures, specifically on needy women who want to be sterilized.
"This hit in a hurry," Conway said, "and a lot of people have been asking questions and there doesn't seem to be enough answers. I know university officials are saying research is going to be separate and apart, and the University of Louisville med school is not part of the merger, but as you can tell by these issues, it gets blurry."
U of L doctors addressed concerns, saying they plan to build a new facility or use an existing one to provide the procedures.
