LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville woman is tackling homelessness one street corner at a time. She is changing the lives of children and adults, making her WDRB's Hidden Hero for July.
"Ahhh there's my buddy," said Mary Kay Taylor as she ran into a crowded meeting room at the Phoenix Health Center on West Muhammad Ali Boulevard in Downtown Louisville.
Taylor opened her arms with a big smile giving her friend Robert Harbin a hug. Harbin and others say Taylor has never met a stranger.
"I would definitely say 'angel' would be a great description," said Harbin who nominated Taylor to be WDRB's Hidden Hero.
Harbin has even described Taylor as his angel. He met her at one of the worst times in his life, after leaving prison to enter a life of homelessness with his son.
"We were living in hotels, you know people's floors and everything and she helped me get a place," Harbin said.
Taylor met Harbin while working for Seven Counties Services in Louisville. She is a casework, helping the homeless and mentally ill.
"Sometimes they [homeless] don't know which way to turn and if we can help them at all it's good," said Taylor.
But those she's helped like Harbin say Taylor does more than just help, she makes them feel like people.
"She brought stuff from her house like blankets, everything we needed make sure we had food," said Harbin.
Taylor's co-workers say Harbin's success story is one of many examples of why Taylor is a hidden hero, because she is selfless and dedicated to those who are often forgotten or ignored.
"Those are people that many of us would cross the street to avoid and she's walking up to them and asking them what they need," said Susanne Binford, Taylor's boss.
For a moment, those who know Taylor gathered together to thank her for lending a caring hand to so many. During a ceremony, friends enjoyed cake as Taylor was presented with the honor of Hidden Hero for July.
