Hargens begins first school year leading JCPS

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- New JCPS superintendent Dr. Donna Hargens is also paying close attention to busing this year.

She will travel to different schools and bus depots throughout the day to check on progress.

Busing is an especially important issue Hargens is focusing on, and she says the district is prepared.

"There are systems in place and structures in place to communicate with parents, if we need to, and if there are any delays or something that's unexpected, once parents have the information then they'll be reassured," Hargens said.

Last year, hundreds of students didn't get home until after 6 p.m., some even at 9 p.m., because of busing confusion.  JCPS blamed the problems on two schools and those principals were disciplined.

This year the district added bus drivers and re-adjusted routes.  New bus tags attach to a student's book bag instead of hanging around their necks.  Hargens says, "We also don't like the whole year to be framed by one day. So our intention was to frame this day as focused on learning. That's what we want this day to do for us."

More than 100,000 students are enrolled in JCPS this year.

The district has also hired approximately 300 new teachers and filled eleven principal openings.
