No charges filed in grenade detonation

LYNCH, Ky. (AP) - No charges will be filed in the detonation of a military gas grenade in southeastern Kentucky that sent about 20 people to hospitals.

Harlan County authorities investigated after a child pulled the pin on a Vietnam War-era grenade on Aug. 1 in Lynch. The children and adults who rushed to help them were covered in an irritating yellow dust.

All of those taken to hospitals were soon released.

WYMT-TV in Hazard quoted police in reporting no charges would be filed.

The grenade was found in an outbuilding by two men who were cleaning it up after a friend died. The widow told them they could keep anything that interested them. Three children found it on a shelf in the home where they were playing and 1 of them pulled the pin.
