Suspects arrested in violent drug store robbery

JEFFERSONTOWN, Ky. (WDRB) -- Gun-toting criminals terrorized customers and employees during a violent robbery at a local CVS drug store on August 19, but Jeffersontown Police have arrested the suspects with help from the community.

The scene at the Jeffersontown Police Department Tuesday looked more like the counter at a drug store.

"They got a grocery bag full of drugs," said Jeffersontown Police Chief Rick Sanders. "They came in very deliberately, knew exactly what they wanted and did not hesitate to use the gun to get the pharmacist to do what they wanted -- made all the customers lay down."

Jeffersontown police say the men in the surveillance video are Richard Wells and his stepson, Carl Waters. They're accused of robbing the CVS drug store on Taylorsville Road, and the surveillance video led to their arrests.

"Combining the tips with the good video surveillance we had, we were able to identify the two subjects that robbed the pharmacy on the 19th," Sanders said.

After several days of surveillance J-Town police arrested Water at their apartment complex, just across the street from the CVS; Wells was arrested a short time later in Frankfort.

"We found him at 4 o'clock this morning in a hotel," Sanders said.

Sanders says both men have violent criminal histories: "assault, robbery, escape, attempted murder on a police officer. They've had a number of run-ins with the law."

Most of the drugs police recovered from the robbery are popular on the streets.

"They took hydromorphone, morphine, oxycodone, Opana, just to mention a few," Sanders said.

No one was hurt during the robbery, but Sanders says customers and employees were a little shaken up.

"You can imagine someone coming in and placing a gun in your face and forcing you to lay on the ground," Sanders said. "That's very scary."

Both men were due in court Wednesday morning.
