Indianapolis police consider new limits on chases

Posted: Updated:

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indianapolis police department is considering a policy change that would prohibit chases under the circumstances that led to a crash that killed two teenagers this week.

Police Chief Paul Ciesielski says the new policy would allow officers to chase only violent suspects who are an immediate threat.

Ciesielski tells The Indianapolis Star that the policy change was under review before the crash Tuesday night that killed a 19-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy who were inside an SUV that had been reported stolen and sped away from officers.

The president of the Indianapolis chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police objects to the policy change, saying that criminals make the choice to flee from officers.
