Bookstore celebrates 33rd birthday

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An independent Louisville bookstore continues to find success, even as chains like Borders have been closing shop in the past few days.

Carmichael's Bookstore owners say they've run into many obstacles: the economy, electronic books, and competition for leisure time, but they say they've found a business model that works.

"We're a very small store. We're very integrated into our neighborhood. We're very personalized. Our staff knows books," says co-owner Carol Besse.

Besse says the store's commitment to the community is why Carmichael's has lived to see its 33rd birthday.

The first store opened on Bardstown Road in 1978. A second location opened in Crescent Hill in 1999.
