Sherman Minton Bridge factoids

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- The Sherman Minton Bridge opened in 1962 and is named for Sherman Minton, the New Albany resident who was a U.S. Supreme Court justice and a U.S. Senator.

The bridge carries westbound traffic toward Indiana on its top level.  It carries eastbound traffic toward Louisville on its lower level.

The bridge carries an estimated 74,000 vehicles per day, according to INDOT 2009 traffic counts.

Indiana is responsible for maintenance of the bridge, per a long-standing agreement with Kentucky. That same agreement says Kentucky is responsible for maintenance of the Kennedy bridge.

It is one of three bridges that carry car and truck traffic across the Ohio River to and from Louisville.
