Hardin Co. "wet-dry" vote nears

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- The head of the Hardin County Chamber of Commerce says going "wet" should not be a religious debate, as a special election on extended alcohol sales draws near.

Local church leaders are fighting it, saying drinking is a sin and will lead to more crime.

On Tuesday, critics hosted a rally at the foot of the Carrollton bus crash memorial in Radcliff.  Survivors of the drunk driving wreck that killed 27 people asked voters to turn down the measure.

It would open up alcohol sales to retail stores in Elizabethtown, Vine Grove, and Radcliff, where bars and liquor stores could open as well.

Brad Richardson of the Hardin Co. Chamber of Commerce says, "We're not encouraging more people to do it. We're telling people who are doing it and spending dollars outside our community to do it here where it does more for the economy."

The special election is to be held on October 4th.
