Upcoming traffic plans due to Sherman Minton closure

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- The next steps in the Sherman Minton bridge closure will be revealed Saturday morning.

Senator Mitch McConnell, Representative John Yarmuth, and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer will join federal and local transportation officials from Indiana and Kentucky.

They'll tour the bridge and discuss what inspections have uncovered so far.

Friday night, drivers on U.S. 31 and I-65 were still dealing with heavy rush hour traffic.

But Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokeswoman Andrea Clifford says re-routing traffic through detours has ironed out many of the kinks caused by the bridge closure one week ago.

"We tried some different things Monday and Tuesday. Some things worked. Some things didn't work as well. So we scrapped that. So pretty much what we've had in place from Wednesday through Friday of this week is what we're gonna stick with," she says.

Drivers could see gridlock on I-71 North and South this weekend.

Clifford says crews are closing down lanes on I-71 between I-64 and I-264 every weekend to finish construction before winter.
