LOUISVILLE, Ky.  (WDRB) --  Gallatin Co., Ky., sheriff Josh Neale was shot and wounded in the abdomen during an incident late Tuesday night south of Glencoe, a Ky. State Police spokesman said.

The incident happened near Kentucky 16 and U.S. 127.  Neale was en route by ambulance to a hospital in Cincinnati, spokesman Tpr. Michael Webb said about 11:40 p.m. Tuesday.  WLWT television in Cincinnati reported an air ambulance helicopter was flying Neale to the hospital.

Neale was described as "alert and conscious" by officers at the scene of the shooting, Webb said.

It was not clear what led to the shooting or whether police had arrested anyone.

WCPO television in Cincinnati reported two people had been shot and were being flown to Cincinnati for treatment after the shooting about 10:30 p.m. EDT.

Details were still being confirmed late Tuesday.

Voters elected Neale as sheriff last November.  Warsaw is the Gallatin County seat.  The shooting scene is located about 60 miles northeast of downtown Louisville.
