With the passing of Owsley Brown, Louisville lost not only a great friend, but one of its most generous benefactors. Mr. Brown's gifts to community groups and causes totaled millions of dollars. But his contributions weren't only financial. His tremendous amount of personal involvement and innovative thinking made him much more than simply a man capable of writing large checks, and our city benefited as much from his passion as his money.
Of course, not everyone is fortunate enough to be as wealthy as Mr. Brown was. It would be impossible for most of us to match the treasure he was able to invest in our community. But that doesn't mean we can't all honor his memory by following his example in our own way and on our own scale.
Maybe it's giving a pint of blood. Perhaps it's giving what we can to the Fund for the Arts. Or maybe it's something as simple as picking up litter we see on the sidewalk. But however we pitch in, every little bit contributes to maintaining the legacy of Owsley Brown.
No one individual is likely to fill the void left by his death, but a lot of people doing little things can accomplish great things. We may not have his riches, but we can emulate his generous spirit and contribute in our own way to make the Louisville area better for us having been here.
