LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police say a homeless man is in trouble after he tried to abandon his dog in Louisville.

According to an arrest report, an officer was near the corner of 17th St. and W. Jefferson St., when that officer saw a dog tied up to a handrail.

As the officer was examining the dog, 48-year-old Gary D. Ransom walked up and told the officer and introduced himself. He told the officer he was homeless, but the dog belonged to him.

The officer was going to leave the dog in Ransom's care, but as the officer was leaving, Ransom allegedly tied the dog back up to the railing and began walking away.

Police say Ransom, "abandoned the dog without food, shelter and water and left him in an area where he would have easily been stolen."

He was arrested and charged with cruelty to animals.
