Spin-off job effect of Ford jobs announcement

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY (WDRB-TV) One thousand new Ford jobs could mean 7000 more new jobs for our area, and local companies are gearing up to meet the demand.

Atlas Machine and Supply in Southwest Jefferson County manufactures and repairs industrial machinery. It works with Ford suppliers and will feel the ripple effect from Ford announcing at least 1,000 new jobs.

Rich Gimmel, the Atlas President, says, "I can tell you that the Ford announcement will have a dramatic impact on peripheral manufacturing, that is feeder manufacturers, Tier 1 suppliers to Ford, many of whom are our customers here."

Councilwoman Madonna Flood says, "When I had the opportunity to go on a tour at Ford Motor Company they said there's about seven spinoff jobs for every job that they add at the plant, seven spinoff jobs for suppliers around the region."

Councilwoman Madonna Flood says the economy will benefit from the local jobs created. The exact number is still up in the air. Congressman John Yarmuth's office says Ford may hire as many as 1600 people.

Ford and the United Auto Workers just agreed to the four-year deal, but it still has to be approved by union workers.

At Atlas, just how many jobs will be created because of Ford's announcement is not yet known.

Gimmel says the challenge for his company right now is finding skilled labor to fill current openings, some paying $70,000 a year. The company is in the middle of hiring right now with more jobs planned later.

He says, "We're still in the process of determining the total impact of the Ford announcement, but we know it's going to be positive on us and on employment. We'll be hiring to meet the need."

Ford has not announced when people can start applying for the new jobs.
