Oakwood no longer under federal oversight

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- The federal government is no longer keeping a close eye on a Kentucky-run residential center for adults with mental disabilities.  Oakwood in Somerset had a long history of abuse, neglect, and poor treatment of residents.

The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services cites substantial improvements at the facility as the reason the Justice Department stopped its court-ordered oversight.

The cabinet hired the Bluegrass Mental Health-Mental Retardation Board to run Oakwood in 2006.  State officials and advocates credit Bluegrass with turning things around.
