LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- While many frustrated commuters find themselves behind the wheel stuck in traffic during the morning and afternoon rush hours, WDRB News Director Barry Fulmer has found a faster alternative: biking across the Second Street Bridge.

Fulmer, a resident of southern Indiana, commutes to and from the WDRB offices in Louisville every day. Like so many others coming from Indiana, Fulmer was frustrated by the traffic backups caused by the closure of the Sherman Minton Bridge. So he change his driving habits. Every morning he parks his car in southern Indiana and bikes across the Second Street Bridge, arriving at the station more quickly and avoiding all the traffic. He does the same on the way back.

Does he recommend his strategy to others?

"Absolutely," he says. "Biking across the Second Street Bridge is faster than driving it."

He says that -- not only has the commute been faster -- it's also drawn his attention to some cosmetic issues on the Second Street Bridge.

"I was surprised at how bad the walkways are on the bridge, which can be dangerous for pedestrians and people riding bikes," he says.

Fulmer took a camera on his most recent trip and snapped some images of what he saw, as well as the cosmetic issues. Click on the "filmstrip" above and use the left and right arrows to toggle through the individual images.
