Mine worker killed in eastern Kentucky

Posted: Updated:

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- State mining officials are investigating a mining fatality in Letcher County in eastern Kentucky.

The state Energy and Environment Cabinet says 23-year-old Richard Coots Jr. was killed about 2 a.m. EDT Friday while repairing a conveyor chain that had broken. The state says Coots crawled under a mobile bridge that fell, pinning him underneath.

Coots was an electrician/repairman who worked for Owlco Energy LLC.

Investigators from the state Office of Mine Safety and Licensing will interview others who were working in the mine when Coots was killed.

The mine remains closed until the investigation is complete.

This is the fourth mining-related fatality in Kentucky this year.
