This morning roughly 270 Fort Knox soldiers will wake up on American soil for the first time in more than a year.

The 8-229th attack reconnaissance battalion returned home to hugs, tears and smiles Sunday. The soldiers deployed to Camp Taji Iraq. That's about 30 miles north of Baghdad.

Their primary role was to support ground troops and help transition the Iraqi military to take charge in their own country. For one returning soldier life greatly changed from what he once knew.

Staff Sergeant Joseph Dudeck, "My mother passed away while I was deployed. My son was born while I was deployed. It feels good to have all my family back in my arms."

There were no casualties from this group during their deployment.
