Spirit of Jefferson to end shuttle service

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Sherman Minton bridge may not open until next year, but the Spirit of Jefferson will be ending its shuttle service this week.

In a news release, Spirit of Jefferson officials said there just weren't enough passengers to make the twice-daily trips across the Ohio River sustainable.

The last shuttle will be from Louisville to Ohio on Thursday, October 13.

According to the news release, the shuttle has been averaging 50 riders during its morning run and approximately 100 on evening runs -- with many evening passengers being joy riders rather than work commuters.

The shuttle has been charging $1 each way to ride, but it costs $700 a day to operate the shuttle.

That's a loss of about $500 per day.

Mayor Greg Fischer said the shuttle was an "innovative option" in the wake of the closing of the Sherman Minton Bridge, but agreed that the shuttle service should end unless ridership increased.
