LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Something new is brewing at Slugger Field in downtown Louisville. The owners of a new restaurant are counting on their love of beer to make it a success.
It is the latest restaurant to open along E. Main Street. The city's newest brew pub is located at the baseball stadium.
Three business partners have opened Against the Grain Brewery and Smokehouse. Sam Cruz, Jerry Gnagy , Adam Watson, and Andrew Ott are the owner/brewers.
"I started brewing beer when I was 17 years old and I knew then I was in love," says Cruz.
"We are brewers," says Cruz, "beer first, beer sells, if its good beer, it really sells, so we feel we can put out a good product and people will come."
Cruz says he's adjusting to transforming from an employee to an employer. He now has to oversee 65 workers.
"I just try to make sure everyone stays happy," says Cruz laughing.
Other restaurants have come and gone from Slugger Field during the past decade, but Cruz and his partners believe now is the right time to open a restaurant at this location.
"It made sense to come downtown with the way things are growing," he says, "with the KFC Yum! Center opening and various other new businesses around."
Cruz says after one week of being open business is off to a strong start. And with basketball season just around the corner and the restaurant just four blocks from the new arena, he expects it will be filled with fans.
"Because we have a giant parking lot beside us," says Cruz, "its a great place to park if you are going down to the game."
Cruz believes with basketball during the winter and baseball in the summer, he and his partners have the right ingredients for a successful restaurant.
