Cause undetermined for deadly Evansville fire

Posted: Updated:

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) -- Investigators say they couldn't determine what started the fire at an Evansville apartment building last month that killed a woman and critically injured her two young daughters.

Twenty-four-year-old Kristyn Frazier died a couple days after the Sept. 6 fire and her 3-year-old and 4-year-old daughters were hospitalized on ventilators in the days after firefighters rescued them from the apartment. The Evansville Courier & Press reports both girls have been released from the hospital.

City fire investigator Richard Howard said Tuesday the fire started around the children's bedroom of the second-floor apartment and electrical causes were ruled out. Arson isn't suspected.

Investigators say they spoke with both injured girls and that the building owner provided documentation that the apartment had a smoke detector when the family moved in.
