THE ROCKETEER: Amateur rocket may have reached lofty goal

Posted: Updated:

CNN (iREPORT) -- CNN iReport, a branch of CNN.com that allows viewers to submit videos and stories, is reporting that an amateur rocket enthusiast may have sent a rocket 120,000 feet up into the edge of space.

The video, which was submitted by a CNN viewer, appears to show the rocket launching from the Black Rock Desert in Nevada and reaching a height from which the curvature of the earth is clearly visible.

David Williams, a Georgia based producer for CNN.com, says the viewer who send the video in has been involved in amateur rocketry for the past 15 years.

"He put everything he's learned over the years into the Qu8k rocket," Williams wrote. "He was one of several teams competing for the John Carmack prize, which would award $5,000 to the team that is able to send a rocket above 100,000 feet and recover it."

Williams said the viewer claimed his rocket reached 121,000 feet, but that he couldn't prove it with the GPS as contest rules require.
