LOUISVILLE, KY (WDRB) -- Well-known rap artist Master P brought a message of hope and forgiveness to the families of murder victims in Louisville on Saturday.

Master P – whose real name is Percy Miller – spent time in Louisville promoting a program aimed at helping at-risk youths avoid drugs and street violence.

Master P - famous for his films and rap hits in late 90s - said Louisville "was a second home to him" offering shelter and a new home to many of his relatives, who were evacuees from Hurricane Katrina.

In speaking with a small crowd at the Expressions of You coffee house on 18th and Muhammad Ali Blvd., Master P discussed his brother, who was murdered 19 years ago.

He was asked by a woman if he thought rap music was fueling street violence. His response:

"I could have used that as an excuse. I should be mad at Ice-T and his song: "I was a nightmare walking psychopath talking'... that's how i was living."

He told the families gathered that he turned to his faith to forgive the person responsible for his brother's murder.

Among the audience members was Michael Dunn, whose son was fatally shot this week at 22nd and Burnett.

"Only you know how you feel," Dunn said. "Others don't know how you feel who haven't been through it. So it touched me by listening to their stories."

Louisville has seen a string of homicides in recent days. Many of them occurring in west Louisville.

He told reporters he felt young children need to be encouraged not discouraged as way to stop drug use and violence.

"We have to figure out how we are going to fix this - I call it a disease - it's a disease that we are killing each other."

Master P was promoting - a California-based non-profit aimed at middle schoolers. The program encourages them to avoid drugs and violence.
