$300,000 for JCPS audit

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Jefferson County Public Schools says it's paying about $300,000 for a complete audit.

25 auditors have been at JCPS schools this week, interviewing board members, teachers, business leaders, and the public.  The team is examining how the systems and structures in place support student learning. Transportation issues and the student assignment plan are also part of the audit.

Lead Auditor John Murdoch explains, "Our focus is everything that affects the design of the curriculum and the delivery, and student achievement is obviously a central focus, and is the central office effective in delivering services?"

Murdoch says, "We'll look at somewhat the transportation issue, not in the terms of everything it does, but what is the impact on transportation and school assignment and other things."

He adds, "We look at the curriculum. Is it aligned to the Kentucky standards, the common core standards? We look at all the assessment data, how are students doing?"

Superintendent Donna Hargens and the Board of Education requested this thorough audit. The team couldn't give any specifics, but says so far, it has found the district has over 800 intervention programs for students.

Murdoch says, "As we look at those hundreds of interventions, what really works? What doesn't? Let's narrow the field because sometimes less can be more because we can give better attention to fewer things."

The team is also examining how the district spends money, achievement trends, and equality among schools.

He says, "We'll probably have in the neighborhood of 20 plus findings and then there will be 8-12 recommendations that comes from an audit."

In January, the team is expected to release a 400-page report on its findings, including recommendations for the school district.

If you want to participate in the audit, you can set up an appointment with the auditors by calling 485-6203. Personal interviews will be conducted this week and phone interviews until November 18th.
