Metro Council approves new districts

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky.  (WDRB) -- Louisville's Metro Council has approved, unanimously, the revised boundaries of the 26 council districts.

The redistricting was required after the 2010 U.S. Census.  Work by a council ad hoc committee had been underway since February.

The census found an increase in Louisville Metro population of 47,000 people from 2000 to 2010.

That prompted council members to redraw districts to have roughly 28,500 people per district and maintain six minority districts.  Another goal was to keep incumbent council members within their respective districts.  The boundaries achieve all three, say council members.

The Jefferson County Attorney says the redistricting plan meets requirements under the federal Voting Rights Act.

It will change districts for some residents.
