Mom accused of stealing over $100K to pay son's legal fees

MADISON, Ind. (WDRB) -- Indiana State Police say a woman in Madison, Indiana stole over $100,000 in cash from a dental office to help her son pay restitution for money he took from a fire department.

State police say 63-year-old Barbara J. McAlister took cash payments from patients and didn't record the transactions. An affidavit says McAlister replaced the missing cash with checks from other patients or the insurance company.

McAlister was arrested Monday and released on $1,000 cash bond. She did not answer a phone call seeking comment at her home Thursday.

The Madison Courier reports McAlister told police she gave the money to Chad McAlister to pay his attorney fees and restitution after he was convicted of stealing nearly $4,000 from the Madison Township Fire Department.
