LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Your L G & E electric bill could shoot up nearly 20 percent over the next four years.

That's the issue the Kentucky Public Service Commission will take up over the next several days.

Both L G & E and Kentucky Utilities are seeking rate hikes to help pay for added federal environmental requirements.

The commission will be looking at the electric companies' plans to clean up air emissions from coal plants.

"This is to look at that plan, to determine whether they have chosen the most reasonable way to comply and then look at how much that's going to cost and what the impact on rates will be from that," PSC spokesman Andrew Melnykovych said.

If approved, rates for L G & E could go up more than 19 percent while KU could climb over 12 percent.

Commissioners will hear testimony starting Wednesday in Frankfort.
