LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Lyndon Fire Chief Russ Rakestraw is asking that the new Veterans Hospital facility not be built on Brownsboro Road.

In a letter to Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell and Rep. John Yarmuth, the chief points out that such a governmental facility pays no property taxes, which the fire district depends upon for funding.  He also says the new facility would bring about more fire calls and possibly more emergency medical responses.

"I would ask that you encourage the Veteran's Administration to consider a site that would not have this negative impact on the Lyndon Fire District or any other suburban Jefferson County fire district," Chief Rakestraw's letter said.

Back in November, Congressman Yarmuth said he understood why the Brownsboro Road location was one of those picked: "It is located within a few minutes of the current facility, addressing the concerns of local veterans about traveling downtown."  Yarmuth also said it could be completed by 2016.

The current VA Hospital at Zorn Avenue opened in 1950.
