LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB)-- It is the story of a real life grinch who stole one Louisville family's Christmas. "Yea! that's exactly what it felt like," Mark Whelan exclaimed, "you walk in and there it is, they took everything."

The Whelan family says the theft has put a veil over their holiday season as they scurry to replace their children's gifts. Each year they stash gifts at a neighbors house. "It's kind of hard to keep kids out at your own house so we just use his house as a landing for Santa." With the neighbors out of town, the thieves broke in

a back door Thursday night, stealing computers and TV's. "They went in the basement and took all of the things we had bought for the children including the stocking things," said Jennifer Whelan.

Just like the Grinch, the stockings were swiped, his three daughters griped, the thieves left few gifts behind. Little did they waste as they even had a taste of the candy that was nearby. "Oh they ate some!" Mark Whelan said, "There were some wrappers sitting around here."

The Whelan family now believes in the Grinch just as much as they do Santa."That just shows that there's some mean spirit," said Mark Whelan, "I'd hate to show my mean spirit because I've been mad about it."

Now the Whelan's are at the malls, scrambling to replace special gifts, and it is harder to find the good deals, now just days out from Christmas.

They say the grinch's heart is two sizes too small, but the Whelan's hope the grinch who stole their Christmas gifts won't sell them off. "Hopefully they have kids that they can use it for because somebody needs some good out of it," said Mark Whelan.

Police are investigating this case. The neighbor believes most of the items can be recovered through homeowner's insurance.
