LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- A proposed hospital merger in Louisville is not a dead issue.  Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear says he will meet with hospital leaders "very soon" to talk about details of a deal and his concerns with it.

The merger would have brought University, Jewish, and Saints Mary and Elizabeth hospitals under one umbrella ownership. But Governor Beshear blocked the sale to Denver-based Catholic Healthcare Initiatives on Friday.

"I will work with U of L and any and all folks down there to try and figure out how they can continue to deliver on their public mission for indigent care and making sure people have the type of care they need so we're open to working on all options that are out there," Beshear said.

Critics of the proposed merger fear the repercussions of a public institution such as University Hospital being bought by a private company practicing religious doctrine.
