LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville woman who was shot by a local constable while allegedly shoplifting at Walmart has been arrested for allegedly shoplifting at Kmart.
Tammie L. Ortiz and her husband, Pedro Ortiz, Jr., were apprehended last week. Police say that on Jan. 10, the pair walked into the Kmart on Outer Loop, near New Cut Rd., and used a knife to cut open a tool set that was on the shelf. Police say Tammie Ortiz then emptied the tools into her purse.
Police say Tammie also took a hoodie. The total value of the items the pair had in their possession was $60.98.
According to the arrest report, the suspects then tried to walk out of the store without paying. Officers stopped Pedro Ortiz, Jr., but Tammie Ortiz allegedly took off the sweatshirt she was wearing and threw it at the loss prevention officer, pushing another loss prevention officer out of the way before she jumped into her husband's truck and drove away.
Her husband was cited for shoplifting, a misdemeanor. Tammie Ortiz was arrested Friday -- three days later -- at her home. She was taken to jail and charged with felony robbery.
It's not the first time Tammie Ortiz has appeared in the media.
In November, Constable David Whitlock was accused of shooting Tammie Ortiz outside a Walmart on suspicion of shoplifting. Whitlock, who was off-duty at the time, says he was asked by store security to stop Ortiz.
Authorities say when he approached her, Ortiz ran over his foot and he fired his handgun. An attorney for Ortiz says his client was shot in the arm and face, and called Whitlock "a reckless cowboy."
Ortiz, who has a lengthy criminal history under the name Tammy Lee Jamian, has been arrested in the past for various crimes including burglary, theft and prostitution.
