LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police say a man who stole over $400 in coinage from a home was foiled after he tried to exchange it for cash at a Kroger Coinstar machine.

According to an arrest report, 24-year-old Terry Davis of Prospect, Ky., broke into the home on Rudy Lane, near I-264 and I-71, on Dec. 19. While inside, he allegedly took two glass jars filled with coins.

The owner later told police that the jars had a combined total of $400 inside.

But police say Davis didn't take the money far. Officers spoke with a clerk at the Kroger in the Holiday Manor Center, near the Graymoor-Devondale neighborhood. The clerk said a man had been in earlier that day and used a Coinstar machine to exchange coinage for currency -- and the amount of the coinage was roughly equal to the amount of the stolen money.

Not only were police able to obtain a copy of the receipt in that transaction -- which totaled $445.64 -- but they also received surveillance video of a man and a woman together pouring coins into the machine from jars that appeared similar to the jars stolen from the home.

Police distributed still photos of the pair to various law enforcement agencies, and a detective with Oldham County Police quickly identified the man as Davis, who he said was on probation for burglaries in Oldham and Jefferson Counties.

Davis was arrested Wednesday evening and charged with theft by failure to make required disposition of property.
