Sheriff needs help to enforce bridge weight limit

LEDBETTER, Ky. (AP) -- A western Kentucky sheriff says he needs help to enforce a new weight limit on a bridge that crosses the Tennessee River.

Kentucky Transportation officials lowered the weight limit earlier this month on the Ledbetter Bridge that connects Livingston and McCracken counties.

But Livingston County Sheriff Bobby Davidson says some truck drivers are disobeying the limit, and he doesn't have enough manpower to enforce it. He says the bridge could be shut down to all traffic if motorists don't heed the restriction.

Davidson asked county officials on Tuesday night for more funding to pay overtime so he can keep a deputy posted at the bridge, according to WPSD-TV. Meanwhile, he is meeting with state transportation officials on Wednesday to see if they can help.
