LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- The babysitter police say beat a 2-year-old girl to death has now been charged with murder. Ashley Chapman's charges were changed from first-degree criminal abuse on Monday.
Kentucky State Police have identified the girl as Lay la Johnson.
Kayla's mother, Jessica Skaggs, told police that after a conversation with the babysitter, Ashley Chapman, Wednesday night, she felt she needed to pick Lay la up right away. Kayla's grandmother, Teresa Barren, rushed Lay la to Hardin Memorial Hospital's emergency room. She was unresponsive, had multiple bruises, and suffered from bleeding and swelling of the brain.
She was then quickly rushed to Kosair Children's Hospital in critical condition.
Police immediately launched an investigation and say evidence led them to the babysitter. "It was discovered the child was in the care of her 28-year-old babysitter, Ashley Chapman of Vine Grove when the injuries occurred," says Kentucky State Trooper Scott Rafferty.
Chapman is housed at the Hardin County Detention Center on a bond of $250,000 in cash. He told KSP that she had previously worked at a Hardin County daycare.
