LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Charlestown, Indiana officials are hoping to flush out the city's dirty little problem.  Starting Monday a new chemical was added to get rid of brown tap water.

The problem is manganese that has built up in older water pipes.  Residents have complained about the dirty water for years, but the city says the discolored water is safe to drink.

Charlestown is spending almost $100,000 to add a chlorinated chemical called Clearitas to city water.  It has no smell and should not harm septic tanks or hot water heaters.
