LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Investigators say cave explorer Kevin Eve planned his trip to the Harrison Crawford State Forest to end his own life. The Crawford County Coroner says Kevin Eve shot himself and did not appear to have any other injuries when he died.
Conservation officers say there were no signs that he was struggling to find his way out.
The 25 year-old Air Force Iraq War veteran was last seen October 1st. Dozens of family members, friends, and volunteers combed the Harrison Crawford State Forest for days after finding his car parked there.
A group of college students discovered his body in the Breathing Hole Cave Sunday night. His body was removed late Monday after a long and demanding recovery process.
That particular cave is filled with narrow passages and has a 154-foot drop at its entrance.
What is still a mystery is exactly when Eve died.
The time of the shooting is something the Coroner's Office is still investigating, although we do know items Eve purchased the day he went missing were found near his body.
The students who found Eve weren't supposed to be there because Breathing Hole cave is closed to the public. Officials say, however, the students have all been interviewed and will not be facing charges.
