2012 Thunder Over Louisville theme: Star-Spangled Blast

Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The theme for the 2012 Thunder Over Louisville is Star-Spangled Blast.  Thunder officials are asking everyone to wear their red, white, and blue to the event.

This year's air show is expected to be the biggest in the country -- it's the 100th anniversary of the Marine Corps, and plenty of Marine aircraft will be in the show, with over 100 planes total in the show.

The show will feature plenty of patriotic music and producers are considering using Whitney Houston's version of "The Star Spangled Banner."

Marine Sgt. and Medal of Honor winner Dakota Meyer had already been named this year's "Thundernator," and will push the button to start the show on April 21. "Who would say 'no' to that," Meyer said on Monday.

A $5 Pegasus Pin will be needed to get into the Great Lawn the day of Thunder.

Officials feel confident that the Sherman Minton Bridge will be open by the time Thunder arrives.  If it happens the bridge is still closed, producers say they have backup plans "A," "B," and "C."

Meyer is a Green County, Ky., native who received the Medal of Honor last year in a ceremony at the White House for his actions in Afghanistan.

Thunder Over Louisville is one of more than 70 events produced by the festival each spring leading up to the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May.
