Louisville, KY (WDRB) From the outside, you can't see a FEMA tent -- because it's actually located inside a garage at Kosair Children's Hospital.
The tent is empty, but if needed it can house up to 10 children. It's heated and ready to go. There are all the supplies needed if the hospital runs out of rooms and needs more places for patients to stay.
Pam Missi, the Director of Patient Care Services says, "We have stretchers, computers available. We can give patients IV fluids here."
Last year, this tent was used for three and a half weeks and saw more than 250 patients. Missi says, "Every year, during January, February time, we have a major influx of patients for a variety of reasons, it may be respiratory illness, GI, etc."
But this year, the flu season has got off to a slow start. Kosair hasn't seen too many cases of true influenza, a contagious respiratory illness. This year's flu vaccine protects against three flu viruses: H1N1 and Influenza A and Influenza B.
The hospital says if the tent is not used in the next couple of weeks, it may be taken down for storage.
