LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police say a traffic stop led to several drug charges early Monday.

According to the arrest report, police stopped a vehicle in the 4400 block of Kurtz Avenue because the license plate had expired in November of 2011. As officers approached, they could hear the sound of LMPD dispatchers coming from the vehicle.

The broadcast was coming from a cell phone carried by 33-year-old John Goodlet, a passenger. Police say Goodlet was "fumbling with the phone in an attempt to turn off police scanner." At the same time, police say he was trying to conceal a meth pipe with a rock in it between the passenger seat and door.

The driver of the car, 31-year-old James D. Jones agreed to let police search the car and that's when police say they found a clear bag of suspected meth in the console and two additional meth pipes under the passenger seat. Police also located plastic tubing, funnels, hoses, clamps lithium batteries and pills associated with the manufacture of meth, according to the report.

Officers also allegedly found butane fuel in the side pocket of the passenger door, as well as two more pills in Jones's coat pocket that matched the other pills.

Police say Goodlet told officers he had just given a "bump" to a female in a silver pickup that had been following Jones's car. He also allegedly stated that he had a pending court date for manufacturing meth.

Both men face several charges, including possession of a controlled substance, trafficking in a controlled substance, tampering with physical evidence, possession of meth making precursors, possession of paraphernalia, and possession of a radio that sends/receives police messages.

Jones was also charged with having an expired registration.

Police say Jones has a previous conviction for possession of a controlled substance.
