LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man who exchanged gunfire with Indiana State Police in Seymour Monday night was found dead in a remote area Wednesday afternoon.
According to Jackson County Coroner Roger Wheeler, 35-year-old John Michael Fish appears to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The official cause of death will not be determined, however until an autopsy has been completed.
Fish's body was discovered by Indiana State Police who were doing a "flyover" of the area northeast of the shooting scene. Just after 1:30 p.m. the helicopter pilot and his spotter discovered a body several hundred yards west of I-65 and north of U.S. 50 near the railroad tracks.
Indiana State Police spokesman Sgt. Noel Houze says they were able to land the helicopter in the area and determined the body was that of a male fitting Fish's description.
Indiana State Police tell us Fish fired on a state trooper in Seymour around 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 20. It happened behind a Circle K gas station near a Ryan's Steakhouse in the city limits, along U.S. 50 near I-65.
No one was injured in the shooting.
A complete autopsy was scheduled for Friday.
