Swap Gigs with Sterling Riggs: NCAA Floor Crew

Posted: Updated:

From the floor to the baskets, the Event Crew at the KFC Yum! Center is responsible for transforming this concrete floor into one of college basketballs biggest stages.

"This will be the fourth year that this floor has been used," said Kevin Washburn, Event Services Supervisor. "The NCAA keeps them when it's not tournament time and then where ever the sites are determined, they will ship it to that site."

Stored in Salt Lake City during the off season, the NCAA floor arrives in big pallets.  Piece by piece it's put together like a giant puzzle.

Kevin told me they are "four feet wide by nine feet long and they come in an entire row on a pallet. They are marked and numbered so we know exactly where they go."

The floor goes down one row at a time, and the 240 pieces are held together by only two pins.

And the guys who put it all together are always looking for a helping hand or a quick break.

From start to finish the floor is about a five-hour project.

"It's going to take a lot of care to get this floor clean," Kevin said. "There is a lot of muck and debris on the floor. It will take about an hour to get this floor into playing condition.

And then it's on to the next project as the crowds eagerly await the tip off of this year's regional tournament.
