No tulips for Derby Week at Churchill Downs

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Race fans won't get to enjoy the beautiful sight of the tulips at Churchill Downs on Derby week -- and you can blame the unseasonably warm weather.  "The tulips aren't going to make it this year," says Churchill Downs' director of horticulture Matt Bizzell in a news release.

Between 6,000 and 12,000 tulips are normally among the sights on Derby Week.  But with the recent warm weather, they'll be blooming about three weeks from now, which is about two weeks early.

The track will replace the tulips with 25,000 annuals growing in the Churchill Downs greenhouse.
