World Down Syndrome Day 2012

Posted: Updated:

Keith Kaiser spent World Down Syndrome Day at Down Syndrome of Louisville's Indiana Campus. There are plans to move the facility from its current location in New Albany to Clarksville.

World Down Syndrome Day, March 21, signifies the genetic make up of someone with Down Syndrome.

Human cells normally contain 23 pairs of chromosomes. One chromosome in each pair comes from your father, the other from your mother. Down syndrome results when one of three types of abnormal cell division involving chromosome 21 occurs. All three cell division abnormalities result in extra genetic material from chromosome 21, which is responsible for the characteristic features and developmental problems of Down syndrome.

People with Down Syndrome have many challenges but with early intervention, they can live fulfilling and rewarding lives.

The biggest message is people with Down Syndrome are more Like than Different.

World Down Syndrome Day is the celebration of the abilities and accomplishments of individuals with Down Syndrome.
